Background and Training

I have been working in the human services field since 1993 and have always emphasized a strength-based approach in my work with clients. My professional development has largely focused on mastering traditional, evidenced-based practices and blending these with newer modalities that incorporate neuroscience and the mind-body connection.

I graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in human services and a minor in expressive therapies from Lesley College and at the top of my class with a master’s degree in social work from Simmons College. Born in the Netherlands and raised and educated in the United States I speak both Dutch and English fluently and have experience with cross-cultural issues and issues related to immigration.

My professional work and training have spanned a variety of settings allowing me to develop a broad range of clinical skills and serve a diverse group of people. Among other specialties, I have expertise in supporting children and families who have experienced trauma. I hold certificates in pregnancy and postpartum issues; infant and toddler development; and family systems, among others. I was certified as a developmental specialist through Early Intervention and have worked with children with special needs in a variety of settings.

I have extensive experience supporting people struggling with mood disorders, addictive behaviors, and relationship issues. I also specialize in understanding and reducing the impact of shame, intimacy issues, and attachment disorders on client functioning and well-being. Additionally, recognizing the impact of various societal issues on individual and family health, much of my work focuses on cultural issues and mitigating the impact these have on individuals and family systems.

I am currently in private practice as a solo-practitioner and work closely with a network of colleagues who can be available to provide adjunct services for client family members when appropriate.

A Holistic Approach to Client Care

In addition to my degree in clinical social work, I am a certified Holistic Psychotherapist and incorporate an integrative treatment style in my work with clients. This includes blending traditional therapies such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Narrative Therapy with neuro-nutrient treatment (the use of nutrients to support optimal brain chemistry), wise mind therapy (deep relaxation and hyno-therapy), and Emotional Freedom Technique (or tapping on merdians to reduce cortisol levels).

Having experience in equitation therapy (hippotherapy) and expressive therapies, I also incorporate creative therapies when appropriate in my on-going work with clients. As an animal lover, I am well aware of the healing power of our furry friends and work along side my therapy dog, George, in my practice.

In addition to providing on-going treatment for clients, I have experience conducting forensic trauma evaluations for the courts, The Department of Family and Children, and for private individuals. I also provide consultations and supervision for colleagues. Additionally, I offer in-person and remote workshops, teach courses through my on-line classroom, and facilitate a free, on-line support group for parents of challenging children.
